Mental Health Awareness Week took place from 18-24th May 2020, led by the Mental Health Foundation. This year the theme was kindness - rediscovering, exploring and celebrating it. You can read more here.
We organised May as a month of interactions designed to address one question:
How will we sustain kindness throughout and beyond lockdown?
We used a method of social change called "Appreciative Inquiry", a method of transforming systems and societies through positive dialogue and inclusive events.
Complete a short 5-10 minute survey and then use it to hold and record positive conversations about kindness with other people. Contribute to a growing body of knowledge about kindness.
View the recorded videos of our 5 x 1.5-hour interactive events, building on survey data, strengthening connections, and leaving us all empowered, uplifted and excited.
Form or join an Action Learning Group and continue to act, and learn. Feedback to the whole community and make kindness the new normal.
These sessions were for wellbeing influencers from all sectors and all sectors were represented.
There are 5 stages in Appreciative Inquiry: Define, Discover, Dream, Design and Do. We worked through these stages, one per day.
Expand your thinking.
Make cross-sector connections.
Raise awareness of your own brand and activities.
Workshops were every weekday 10-1130am. If your organisation was represented at all 5 events we'll be presenting you a Certificate of Extreme Kindness with a special shout out and profile on our partners page.
“Kindness unlocks our shared humanity and is central for our mental health. It has the potential to bring us together, with benefits for everyone, particularly at times of great stress. The research clearly shows that acts of kindness can help improve wellbeing. This is true whether we are giving or receiving it.”
Appreciative Inquiry is a method of social change, used all over the world. It works particularly well when representatives from all parts of a system are involved. We create our own futures; what we focus on becomes our reality. And things change fastest when people feel good. So let's talk about kindness.
